My Morning Routine - How I started and Tips to start your own
I LOVE to start the day with 'me time' so my morning routine is a must do, non negotiable that sets me up nicely for the rest of the day.
Let me tell you though, I haven't always been a morning person! I used to much prefer to stay in my warm, cosy bed and hit the snooze button atleast 5 times before actually getting up and going! This always left me running around the house in a state of havoc with little time to get myself organised and this 'stress mode' would often lead me throughout the entire day.
I decided one day, only last year, that I would commit to a new approach to start my day. I committed to a 5am start ( I know so early!!) which would allow me an hour of 'me time' to practice yoga/pilates, a meditation and some journaling before my daughter generally woke.
I'm not going to lie, it was challenging for the first week or so as my body clock hadn't adjusted to the early starts but I knew it would eventually get easier. And it did.
It's now my favourite way to start the day. I love waking up to the peace and quiet and knowing I have time to myself. This is my time to move my body, meditate, set my intentions for the day and if time permits, write in my journal. It helps me feel calm yet energised and just helps me start the day in a positive way.
As I said earlier my morning routine is a must do, non negotiable - but within reason. So if my daughters been up all night, or if I've been unwell, or if I'm feeling physically exhausted, of course I don't force myself to get up at 5am. I allow myself flexibility with this when needed.
There have been a few things that have really helped me implement my morning routine and so I have listed some tips here that may help you too.
- As soon as your alarm goes off in the morning get out of bed - act quickly so you don't have time to think about how tired you are or how warm your bed is
- Have your morning routine already thought out - know exactly what you want to do and for how long
- Prepare the night before - so if you want to exercise have your active wear already out, if you want to journal have your journal and pen by your bed / on your desk
- Shift your mindset - so instead of saying 'Im so tired I can't be bothered doing this', practice saying 'I'm proud of myself for committing to this new routine and am excited to start my day doing things that make me feel great'
- Write a commitment statement and read it every morning and night to keep you focused
- Remind yourself that it takes consistency to form a new habit, keep at it even if it feels challenging in the beginning
- Make it a time for you. Do the activities that make you feel good and that will help you feel fabulous to go about your day.
